General information only

Everything on WaterPlain (waterplain.com) is general information, published to help readers understand home water treatment. It is not medical, plumbing, engineering, legal, financial or other professional advice, and it does not take your own home, water or health into account. For decisions that matter, please speak to a qualified professional.

Your water and your health

Nothing on this site can tell you whether your water is safe. Only testing can show what is in it, and a product is not a substitute for a test. Take test results or illness to your state or county health department, a doctor or a certified lab. In an emergency, call 911.

If you drink from a private well, EPA says that private well owners are responsible for delivering safe drinking water to their households, and that the federal government does not regulate the quality of that water.

Chemicals such as bleach, and work on wells, plumbing and electrics, can be dangerous. Follow the instructions from your state health agency and the manufacturer, or hire a qualified professional.

No testing

WaterPlain has no lab and tests nothing. We do not claim to have used the products we describe. Comparisons rely on published certifications, specifications, prices and studies, which come from others and which we cannot verify ourselves. A certification covers only what its listing says, so check the listing for the exact model and contaminant.

Accuracy

Pages are checked against the sources they cite, but no check catches everything. Limits, rules, prices and certifications change, sometimes quickly, so a figure may be out of date by the time you read it. Check important details with the original source before you rely on them.

Costs and local rules

Costs are estimates, and your local quotes may differ. Rules on softeners, discharge, plumbing permits and septic systems vary by state, county and city, so check with your local authority or a licensed plumber before you install anything.

Calculators and estimates

Calculators give estimates based on what you enter and on the figures they cite. They are not quotes, guarantees, or sizing or safety sign-offs. They print numbers only, so read the notes on the page around them.

How our content is made

Every page is fact-checked against primary sources before it is published. Pages appear under the WaterPlain name. Our editorial policy explains the process.

Advertising and independence

WaterPlain is funded by display advertising. Advertisers have no say over what we publish, and an ad on a page is not an endorsement. We use no affiliate links, accept no paid placements and sell no leads. Names of companies, products and certifiers are used only to identify them, and we are not affiliated with them.

We link to sources and other websites so you can check what we say. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content.

Questions and corrections

If you think something is wrong, email contact@waterplain.com with the page address and a source, and we will look at it. See also our corrections page and terms of use.
