About WaterPlain

WaterPlain is an independent guide to home water treatment. How we are funded, how we check our pages, and what we do not claim to do.

WaterPlain is an independent, plain-English guide to home water treatment for US homeowners: softeners, filters, reverse osmosis, well water and testing what is in your tap. We explain what each option does and does not do, what it costs, and when you may not need it at all.

Who we are

WaterPlain is an independent guide to home water treatment. Our pages are written for readers in the United States and checked against US sources such as EPA, CDC, USGS, the Code of Federal Regulations, state health agencies and university extension services.

We are not a government agency, a utility, a health department or a water treatment company. Articles are published under the WaterPlain name.

How we are funded

WaterPlain is funded by display advertising. Ads may not appear yet while the site is new. Once they run, they may come from companies in the water treatment business. An ad is not an endorsement, and advertisers have no say over what we publish.

How we stay independent

  • No affiliate links. We earn nothing if you buy something after reading a page.
  • No paid placements. Nobody can pay for coverage, a mention or a better position.
  • No sold leads. We do not pass your details to dealers or installers, and we have no quote form.
  • Nothing for sale. We do not sell or install water treatment equipment.

How pages are checked

Every page gets a fact-check against primary sources, separate from the writing, and the sources are linked at the claims they support. Our editorial policy explains each step.

What we do not do

WaterPlain has no lab and tests nothing. We do not claim to have used the products we describe. We compare published certifications, specifications and studies, and we say so.

Treat our pages as a starting point, and take test results or health concerns to your state or county health department or a certified lab.

Mistakes and questions

Our corrections page logs what we have fixed, and our contact page says how to reach us. Please read our disclaimer too: everything here is general information, not medical or professional advice.
